BOZELL BIOGRAPHY

Andy has been involved in auto racing all of his life. His dad, Gordy Bozell raced from 1960 until 1983. Andy traveled to the races with the family and worked on dad's cars as soon as he could handle the wrenches and in his later teen years also worked as a mechanic on brother-in-law Danny Foote's car from 1978 to 1980. In 1983, Dad put his driving career into retirement and became the owner of cars for Andy and our brother Jeff and Andy's driving career began.
Andy began his driving career in 1983 racing at Southwest Michigan Speedway (SWMS) and at Kalamazoo Speedway. At SWMS, he was the runner-up track champion with 6 feature wins. In the same year, he had 2 feature wins at Kalamazoo.
He continued this course for 1984 and again was the runner up track champ at
SWMS gathering up 5 feature wins. He also matched this number of feature wins
at Kalamazoo Speedway.
1985 saw him move his home track from SWMS to Galesburg Speedway where he won
an astonishing 16 features and taking his very first track championship. He
also took 1 feature win at Kalamazoo this year.
Andy returned to Galesburg in 1986 and repeated as track champ with 6 feature
wins. He also took home first place in the first endurance race held at Galesburg,
which was a 250 lap race. He visited SWMS a couple of times & won the Michigan
vs. Indiana Challenge Cup and also was the runner up in their 250 lap Endurance
Race.
1987 saw Andy garner 7 Features at SWMS which made him the top feature winner
of the year. He was runner up track champion and placed 2nd in the Michigan
vs. Indiana Challenge Cup. Andy visited Kalamazoo Speedway for their Turkey
Trot 250 lap Endurance Race and won it. He also traveled to Steuben County Speedway
and placed 3rd in the Stock Car Nationals.
Andy continued to run at SWMS in 1988 where he won a coveted 11 Features and
was the Track Champion. He also captured the 250 lap Enduro at Kalamazoo Speedway
and placed 8th in the US Enduro Championship race.
In 1989, Andy returned to Galesburg Speedway to compete in the Late Model Division. His knack for winning features continued with 16 Feature wins. He was the top feature winner in his division, and placed 2nd in the points. He also raced at Kalamazoo Speedway on Fridays, and he finished 6th in the point standings there. Traveling specials for 1989 included winning an Open Competition Special Feature at SWMS, winning the Harvest of Speed International at Spartan Speedway. He also ran in the Budweiser Cavalcade at Sandusky, OH. He was 6th quickest among 120 top late model drivers from the Midwest, including 10 ASA drivers.
A new decade starting in 1990, with Andy continuing his winning ways. 1990 concluded with Andy getting his3rd overall track championship at Galesburg Speedway with 8 feature wins. He continued to race at Kalamazoo on Fridays and totaled 4 features and 2nd place in the point standings there for 1990. He traveled again to Sandusky, OH for the Budweiser Cavalcade and this year was 5th quick in qualifying out of 60 drivers from all over the Midwest. Andy also competed at Midvale Speedway in their Fall Classic and qualified 3rd quick.
1991 was a major move year for Andy. He ran pretty exclusively at Kalamazoo Speedway and racked up 3 feature wins and finished 4th in the point standings. He also placed 2nd in the Super Shoe Nationals. He traveled to Galesburg Speedway for 3 feature wins and also won the Harvest of Speed at Spartan Speedway for the 2nd time.
1992 he again placed 4th in points at Kalamazoo with 2 feature wins. He traveled to Galesburg 7 times and won all 7 features. The team traveled to New Paris Speedway for their end of the season Blow Out 100 lap Championship race and placed 2nd.
He was making a name for himself at Kalamazoo Speedway in 1993, where he won 4 features, including the first ever 200 lap Kalamazoo Klash. Winning the first ever Klash is Andy's most memorable moment of his career to date. He placed 3rd in the points and received the True Value Hard Charger of the Year Award. Andy also raced in the ARTGO Series this year.
With 9 feature wins in 1994, Andy won his first ever NASCAR Winston Weekly Series sanctioned championship. He was 3rd in the Great Northern Regional standings. He repeated as winner of the 2nd Kalamazoo Klash 200 lap race. The year finished in fine style with a win in the Super Shoe Nationals. He traveled to New Paris, IN for their end of season championship race and finished 2nd.
Andy's biggest win in 1995 was the year end season championship. He concluded the year with 4 features and was the track runner up champion. He ran the Main Event race at Columbus Speedway and was the top qualifier, setting a then, new track record. He again returned to New Paris year end race and was the top qualifier there also.
1996 was a different kind of year as Andy dabbled in the ASA circuit, along
with running at Kalamazoo. He rounded up 4 features wins at the zoo and won
a last chance races in the ASA series at Hawkeye Downs Speedway in Cedar Rapids,
Iowa & Jennerstown Speedway, PA
M-40 in Jones, MI was the new hot spot for 1997, running on Friday nights along
with Kalamazoo on Saturdays. Andy won a total of 14 features: 3 regular features
at Kalamazoo along with his 3rd Kalamazoo Klash victory, 9 at M-40, including
the season ending Border Wars and he once again claimed the Harvest of Speed
at Spartan Speedway.
Andy reclaimed the track champion title at Kalamazoo in the Super Late Division with 9 feature wins. He doubled up on track championships, winning also at M-40 with 9 wins also. Adding to the total was a victory in the 150 lap Tri-State championships on May 15 along with the MISS Super Late Model Series feature on June 12, making a total of 20 feature wins for 1998.
1999 marked his second straight championships at both Kalamazoo and M-40. As competition was tight at Kalamazoo, he ended up with 3 feature wins, but was regularly in the top 10. He mowed down the competition at M-40 with and astounding 17 Super Late feature wins.
A pattern was beginning to emerge at Kalamazoo as Andy was the first Super Late track Champion in the new decade, making his 3rd straight at Kalamazoo, with again, 3 Feature wins. His 3-Peat was complete as he won the crown at M-40 with 6 feature wins on the season. In 2000, he also visited Galesburg on July 2 for the Pat Beebe Memorial and emerged victorious as well as taking the 3rd leg of the Lane Automotive Challenge on 9/3, also known as the Holiday Rumble 100.
Andy achieved a never thought possible 4th straight track championship at Kalamazoo in 2001, picking up the magical number of 3 features. He also made track history as the first ever driver to run the A main features in all 3 divisions on the same night at Kalamazoo. Along with the track title, Andy received the coveted Most Popular Driver Award from the track.
2002 would show a very skinny number in the win column as Andy picked up only 2 SLM feature wins, but it was his consistency that kept him up in the points as he went on to pick up his 5th straight track title. He did finish the year in grand style, as he won the Season Championship features in both the Super Late and the Limited Late Model division (in Randy Chupp's car) and also won the Super Shoe Nationals in October. Enduros were a highly demanding race during this season and Andy won 3 of the big money races, including the World 300, the Firecracker 300 and the 17th Annual U.S. Enduro Champion 300, giving him the Championship Title. Andy ran New Paris for their first ever Summer Sizzler and finished 3rd in a fine field of Super lates from Indiana and Michigan. End of the year awards included being voted Michigan Racing Scene's People's Choice Award for Favorite Super Late Model Driver.
In 2003 he continued his winning ways in the Enduro events, claiming victory twice, on May 26 and July 6. This gave him his 2nd Enduro Championship Track Title. He also won the 2nd Annual New Paris Summer Sizzler, paying $20,000 to win, his biggest victory outside of the state of Michigan. At Kalamazoo Speedway, Andy ended up with 3 features wins on the year and was again the track champ, now his 6th unprecedented title in the super lates. Andy also was awarded the Driver of the Year Award by Michigan Racing Scene.
The crown jewel to date for Andy is finishing 2004 as track champion for the 7th straight year. He had a dream season with 8 feature wins and no finish lower than 4th for the year. He won his first ever NASCAR Weekly Series title as he beat them all in the Heartland Region. He finished 2nd overall in the nation, just a couple thousandths of CPI points behind the National Winner. Andy also now has the distinction of being the ONLY NASCAR Weekly Racing Series driver to win 7 consecutive track championships. He also showed his versatility as he jumped into a modified on July 19 and took the feature and then went on the Thunder Valley (formerly M-40) at the end of the year and won again in the same modified.
Andy has started the 2005 season with racing the modified class in Florida, racing for the first time ever at Ocala Speedway and New Smyrna Speedway.
So far in his driving career Andy has won a total of 15 Track Championships and has also won the Kalamazoo Speedway Enduro Championship twice for an overall total of 17 Championship Titles. He has over 200 Feature wins to his credit. His biggest payday for a race of his career was winning the $20,000 Summer Sizzler in 2003. He also made over $50,000 in prize money from NASCAR in 2004 for winning the Heartland Region.
Andy has received numerous awards from tracks and was also the winner of the 2003 Michigan Racing Scene Driver of the Year. He has also received the President's Award from the Jones Family @ Kalamazoo Speedway. He also received Driver of the Decade for the 1990's from Beebe Signs. He is the only driver to have competed in 17 straight Super Shoe Nationals (Super Shoe #1 to #17)
He has raced in the Super Late Division, Limited Lates, Sportsman, Factory Stocks, Enduros, USA Modifieds, Dwarf Cars, ASA, ARTGO and Midgets.
The many tracks he has raced on include: Kalamazoo Speedway, M-40, SWMS, Galesburg, Berlin, Spartan, Tri-City, Springport, Butler, Hartford & Owosso. Out of state tracks consist of: Toldeo, Midvale, Sandusky, Columbus & Shadybowl (all in Ohio), New Paris, South Bend,Baer Field, Avilla, Angola, Illiana and Plymouth ( all in Indiana), Rockford & Grundy Co in Illinois, The Milwaukee Mile and Wisconsin International in Wisconsin, Hawkeye Downs in Iowa, Southern National in Kenley, NC , Elko Speedway in MN, Jennerstown, PA. and New Smyrna & Ocala Speedways in Florida.
Over the last couple of years, Andy has started his son Phil in the ARCA series, where Andy has been the crew chief for the team, along with being the team owner. He looks to expand this venture in 2005 along with running regularly at Kalamazoo.
Andy is married to wife Deb and they have three children: Phil, Christy and
Andy John. Over his career, Andy has partnered with his dad Gordy, John DeHollander,
Larry Knowlton, Greg Brigham, Jonny Mines & Mick Kasten, all as either car
owners or partners.
